In a recent blog we took a look at some of the more common plumbing issues and how they can be rectified. In the next part of this series, we continue our look into some of the problems that we regularly face.
Issues With Drainage Smells
This is very often a summer issue and results from vacuum forming within the waste pipes because insufficient displacement air is being drawn in via the vent pipe. When this happens, it can begin to release foul smells
The cause of this is often when several different fittings (basins, shower and bath) flow into the same waste pipe before it reaches the soil stack, and the pipe becomes full (especially on long, shallow pipe runs). The effective way to counter this unpleasant problem is to fit anti-siphon traps.
Leaking appliances are very common domestic plumbing issues. Due to the ability to turn off the appliance in an emergency, it is very common, for a homeowner to call an emergency plumber to come out and just isolate the water supply in an emergency.
Without doubt one of the most common plumbing issues, this is a problem that should be nipped in the bud at the earliest possible opportunity.
The first thing that must be done is to switch off the water mains in the house, holding the spout of the tap and unscrew the nut that holds it in place. Check the washer and see if it needs to be replaced and if so, tighten up the bolt and you may well see the issue has been resolved.
Dealing With a Blocked Sink
We have all had to deal with a blocked sink at some point or another (if it hasn’t happened to you yet, trust us, it will do!).
Fortunately this is a problem that can often be cured by using some old school tools such as a plunger or some plumbing wire. If you have any lingering problems, give us a call and we will be able to quickly solve the problem for you.
A frustrating problem that can often appear with no warning whatsoever, this annoying problem can often be caused by the condition of the flapper valve, which is the rubber seal that sits at the bottom of the tank or the ball-cock washer. Fortunately, these are very cheap and simple to replace.
