A recent Gas Safety Trust poll of 2,000 people has highlighted the fact that despite the fact that many people are aware of the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning, just 13% of people can identify the main symptoms and characteristics of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.

Younger People At Risk

The  poll indicated that it was the younger age group (under 25s) as the age group least able to identify all of the symptoms and characteristics. The report also found that less than a third had an audible carbon monoxide alarm in their home.

“With the Department of Health estimating 40 deaths per year from Carbon Monoxide, it is essential that people get their appliances checked on an annual basis by an appropriately qualified engineer from Gas Safe Register and that every household an audible CO alarm.” – Chris Bielby, chair of the Gas Safety Trust.

The six main symptoms you need to look out for are:

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Breathlessness
  • Collapse
  • Loss of Consciousness

The symptoms are very similar to those associated with flu, food poisoning, viral infections and general tiredness; so it is quite common for this very dangerous poisoning to be mistaken for something less serious.

If you are experiencing these symptoms at home, be sure to get fresh air immediately, contact your doctor, and arrange for a gas safe engineer to inspect your gas appliances at the earliest opportunity.

Reducing The Risks

The risks posed by carbon monoxide poisoning can be significantly reduced by ensuring that you have your appliances regularly serviced.
