The sound of clanging pipes is never great, especially if it is in your home. Known within the trade as water hammer and is particularly common in many old properties found within London which still use old plumbing systems.

You should not deprive yourself of comfort by living with banging sounds from water pipes. Give the team at J & P a call and we will be able to help you stop the sound of the water hammer.

What Causes Problems?

Now it’s getting a bit colder & the heating is coming on more regularly, many people are beginning to experience recurrent banging through the pipes.

Typically found within the cold water system because this is mains fed and at a higher pressure than the gravity-fed system, the noise is created by moving pipes which bang on under-floor surfaces or on other pipes. Because pipes are excellent conductors of sound, the noise can be magnified many times and cause quite a racket.

Banging noises from water pipes can be alarming especially if it is the first time for you to hear it. However, you should not worry since this situation is manageable when handled properly.

What to do?

In order to prevent banging noises due to a sudden loss of air, you must learn to close water taps slowly. This will help control the water pressure and decrease it gradually. It is also advisable for you to check the source of water hammer so you can install insulators around it. You can locate the water hammer site with the help of an expert. An emergency plumber can also install your pipes with water hammer arresters or a pressure reducing valve. This will help control the vibration and prevent banging.

Another common cause of clanging pipes is loose water pipes. Water pipes are very common in an older house and when they become loose and move out of place, they will not be able to control the vibration caused by the pressure of flowing water. When the pressure becomes too much, the water hammer makes an appearance.

The main difficulty for your plumber, however, can be getting to the pipes as often these are boxed in or under floorboards, and it may be necessary to lift up floors or break into a concealed box to gain access; this is a regular occurrence in the older houses of London. It is often more cost effective to find the valve that is causing the water hammer and replace, adjust or adapt it.
