If you experience a leak in your plumbing, it is important that you act promptly to prevent serious water damage. If you are in the house when the leak occurs, and you notice it quickly, you can usually stop the worst of the damage.

The Crucial First Step

Take a moment, right now, to find out where your stopcock is located and make sure that you know how to operate it, and that it is not stuck. This will ensure that should a leak occur you will be able to respond quickly and stop the water from damaging your home.

If the leak is severe enough that it starts dripping through the ceiling or down the walls, or it is in danger of running close to an electrical circuit, turn off the gas and the electricity supply as well to prevent electrical damage or an explosion. This is not usually necessary for a small drip, especially if you are able to catch the drips in a bucket. However, if you are ever in doubt as to whether you should turn off the electrical supply or not, it is best to err on the side of caution and do so.

Turning Off Electricity

If your carpet or floor tiles are wet, turn off the electrical supply and get rid of all surface water before you do anything else.  Do not use a standard vacuum cleaner to soak up water. If it is safe to use electricity, use only a wet vacuum cleaner. If the water has also penetrated the walls it might be a good idea to call in an expert to dry out the property so that you do not have to worry about damp problems at a later date.

Take out soft furnishings and allow them to dry in fresh air and sunlight if you have the opportunity to do so. Use fans indoors to circulate air and help to dry things out more quickly.

It is a good idea to take photographs of everything you can along the way so that you can show them to insurers so they can see the extent of the damage, and so that they can see what sorts of repair work or precautions you have taken. However, you should only enter a flooded property once you are sure it is safe to do so. Seek expert advice if you have any concerns.
