There are far too many people based in and around London who are faced with the prospect of having to deal with all manner of bad plumbing.

Whilst the end problem is all too often very clear to see, the cause of the problem is not always so clear and it may take a professional diagnosis to get to the bottom of the problem. The good news is though that the majority of the problems inexpensive to fix and can be rectified quickly and with the minimum of fuss.

Do You Have a Poor Hot Water Supply?

This is a particularly common problem and if you find that the problem is low hot water pressure there is a good chance that the system is gravity fed (header tank), which can be improved by adding a pump to the system.

Alternatively, a better option is to fit a pressurised hot water system, using either an unvented cylinder or a combi-boiler.

If the problem is poor hot water flow rate, the root cause of the problem is likely to be an undersized combination boiler — a very common problem where an additional bathroom has just been added to property causing an increased demand for hot water. The solution to this is to upgrade the boiler to a higher output model sized to match the demand, or to switch to a boiler and unvented cylinder.

Is Your Cold Water Pressure Too Low?

Is the pressure is low (at the kitchen tap), it can often be rectified by upgrading the size of connection into the property from the mains to improve the flow and reduce pressure loss.

In older properties which have been built before 1970, there is every chance that they will not have been updated since and will still be connected to the mains by lead piping. If this is the case, the appropriate action will be to replace the lead piping with plastic.

Is The Hot Water Taking Too Long To Filter Through?

If you have a combi boiler system the options to improve the time hot water takes to reach a remote bathroom are essentially limited to the fitting of a separate water heater, or perhaps an electric shower.

To reduce heat loss throughout the system, it may prove to be beneficial to put the pump onto a timer
