As with all tradesmen some plumbers are better than others. If you have some plumbing work which needs to be done then it really does pay to find the best plumber for the job. This can help to save you time, trouble and money over the long term.

Here are a few things to look out for when you need to employ the services of a plumber:

  • Step 1 – “Word of mouth” is by far the best way to find any type of professional tradesperson. If somebody you know has had plumbing work done recently then ask them about any recommendations. Ask around your friends, family, neighbours and work colleagues if they can suggest any plumbing company, you could always ask to check out the standard of their work before making your final decision. The chances are that if a plumber has done a good, professional job and provided an excellent service for your friend then they will do the same for you.
  • Step 2 – Make sure that the company has the necessary qualifications and experience to do the work you need. Are they members of a trade association? Do they have any references from previous customers? Is there any online feedback which you can check over? Never be afraid to question them about their experience and qualifications.
  • Step 3 – Do they have a reliable business? Your chosen plumber should have a physical address and contact details in case you need to contact them out of hours. If a plumbing company is not willing to give out these details it is a bad sign. You should have a contact telephone number where you can reach them in case of emergencies, out of hours if necessary. You should also ask how long the business has been trading to make sure that it is a well established and reputable company.
  • Step 4 – Ask for an estimate (a rough price) and a quotation (a fixed price) before you give them the go ahead to start on any work. You should receive either in writing before any work starts. It is a good idea to get prices from a number of plumbing firms before you make your final decision but beware – it is not always a good idea to go for the cheapest price. Check what is included in each quoted price to make sure that you won’t get any nasty surcharges or surprises when the job has been finished.

Follow these simple guidelines and you should not have any problem in finding a reliable, professional plumber available to do all of your future work.
