It is never a good idea to waste anything and water is no exception. Scarce in some areas in the world and very expensive in others, if you have a water meter installed in your home, it is always a good idea to conserve water wherever possible to help keep your bills down to a minimum.

To help you keep your wastage down to a minimum we have drawn up a list of 10 great tips. Let us know which ones you think are best?

  1. Don’t use your dishwasher or washing machine until they are full. Running half loads of either will increase the number of times that you use them resulting in much higher water consumption.
  2. One for the summer now – make sure that you do any garden watering during the evening. The water will not evaporate so quickly and therefore you will not have to water again so quickly.
  3. Taking a shower rather than running a bath is an obvious water saver but did you know that a reduction of just 60 seconds per shower will save over 680 litres of water a month (based on a shower a day)?
  4. Re-use water wherever possible. Do you have a fish tank? Rather than tipping the water away when you clean your tank, water the garden with it to kill two birds with one stone.
  5. Don’t run food under the hot water tap when thawing it. Plan ahead and leave to thaw naturally.
  6. Use a water saving shower head for your shower.
  7. Consider investing in a new slim-line toilet. This can help to save a considerable amount of water each year.
  8. When buying a new kitchen water using appliance – consider models that have adjustable load settings.
  9. Another tip for the summer. Try keeping your grass slightly longer as this will help to retain moisture.
  10. Make sure everything in your house that uses water is working properly. Any leaks can result in significant water loss, all of which will help to pile on the pounds onto your water rates.
