Making The Most of Your Heating
As plumbers by trade we are often called to homes which have are being impacted by one or more of the following problems I am often called out to a home which has one or a combination of the following problem:
- Heating system slow to warm
- Radiators failing to warm
- Cold spots on radiators
- Faulty boiler
- Leaking radiators
- Discoloured water when radiators are bled
Sometimes it will take drastic action to restore heating to its former good health, whereas other times, we will be delighted to recommend a strong power flush of the heating systems.
Power flushing a central heating system has been designed to flush away the build of of sludge within the system which causes the radiators not to warm up properly. Once this is done the system is cleaned with fresh water and an inhibitor is added for future protection.
Our skilled team of Gas Safe registered plumbers will usually be able, depending upon the size of the property, to complete this type of job in one day restoring your central heating system back to full health.
Great Investment
Whilst power flushing of a central heating system is considered a great investment in a tired heating system it is very important to know any potential risks that you may be exposed to. There is no doubt whatsoever that a power flush will be extremely effective in cleaning systems that have corrosive problems as a result of a design fault, but we recommend in the strongest possible terms that any such design faults be corrected first.
The success of a power flush will depend on the level of heating system corrosion which has occurred beforehand and whilst the problem will cure the majority of circulation problems, it does not offer the ability to cure any corrosion and gradual decay that has led to the need to power flush the system.
System Inspection
Whilst it is rare for a heating system to experience leaks after the power flush process, it is impossible to conduct a comprehensive internal inspection of the system beforehand.
The advanced stage of corrosion required to cause a leak would ensure that a leak would have taken place imminently regardless of whether the power flush had taken place or not. We believe that it is always better for this to happen whilst we are there to allow us to sort any problems rather than let them escalate over time.
Any heating system which has been neglected over a period of time, may be effected by severely compacted corrosion debris, in the pipe work, radiators, or boiler, and it is possible that even after the power flush, some radiators may still not be fully effective, or boilers on the margin of failure may cease working due to sludge and debris later breaking loose and collecting in the heat exchanger.
