Keeping Your House Warm This Winter
Have you ever experienced radiator problems at home? If you can genuinely answer no to this, you are very fortunate. We have nearly all experienced problems with our radiators not performing as well as we would like. After all, radiators have one purpose, to warm our property, and as such we want to do everything that we can to make sure they get as hot as possible.
Below we have identified an easy to follow four tip guide designed to provide advice on some tips that you can take to get your radiator back on track.
- Tip 1 -The first thing to take a look at is whether the valves on either side of the radiator are fully open. If the valves are fully open, but the radiator is still cold then there is a possibility that the valves may be blocked by lime scale. In case the valves are blocked, the radiator may need to be flushed out and / or radiator valves changed.
- Tip 2 – If your central heating is switched on and the radiators are still cold then the heating system could be filled with sludge which will stop the circulation of hot water. On open vented central heating system you should be able to solve your cold radiator problems just by cleaning your system. Cleaning heating system can be a big job, so you may need to get a professional plumber.
- Tip 3 – If central heating radiator is hot at the bottom and colder at the top, the likely cause of this is trapped air in the radiator. This problem is easily resolved by bleeding the radiator.
- Tip 4 – Should you experience a problem with your downstairs radiators failing to heat up, it is highly likely that your pump is broken or it is failing. Only one cold radiator downstairs – system balancing might be needed. Cold radiators upstairs of your home generally indicate that the feed and expansion tank is empty. The feed and expansion tank is usually located in the loft. Refill the tank so that there is enough water to float the ballcock. If your feed and expansion tank was empty, make sure there are no leaks in the central heating system.
We always recommend leaving it to the professionals though as one phonecall to J & P can see your plumbing & heating problems quickly disappear!
